Article I

Customs

 

 1.         It is the individual member’s responsibility to enhance the band’s reputation by doing his best in all band activities.

 2.         A professional attitude is expected of all members throughout band rehearsals, programs, and any other activities. As a Christian Brothers Band Member, one is expected to represent the ideals of this historic program in all activates that he participates in.

 3.         As the officers virtually run the band, a mutual respect must exist between the band, the officers, section leaders and the director.

 4.         Band rehearsal starts with the Alma Mater and followed by the School Song no later than 3 minutes after the bell.

 5.         No band member is to miss rehearsal unless it is absolutely necessary. The director must approve absences from rehearsal and the section leader must be notified. An Absence Excuse form must be filled out 3 days before the absence.  If one is sick and can not make it to a rehearsal the student should call the band room personally. (Band Room 261-4922)

 6.         No band member is to miss a performance or mandatory practice unless it is absolutely necessary.  A missed performance must have approval from the band director.  The student and their parent/guardian must fill out an absence report seven days in advance.  If one is sick and can not make it to a performance the student should call the band room personally. 7.         Members of the band are expected to be meticulously clean and neat in the band room and at public performances.  No food is allowed in the band room without the permission of the band director and no dinks outside of water after school is acceptable.

8.         No horn is to be left at school overnight without authorization from the band director or secretary.  Everyone's name should be clearly displayed on their horn case.

9.         No one may be in the Director’s office unauthorized.

10.       No band member is allowed to play or touch another’s instrument including percussion.  One is liable for any instrument  that he damages.

11.       If the officers call a meeting of the band members, it is the responsibility of the members to attend.

12.      If an officer gives an order it is the same as if the Director has given it.

 13.      Members of the band must be in complete uniform as specified by the Director.  School uniform must worn at all times during rehearsals.      

14.      No electronic devices including I-pods, cell phones, calculators, or video games are allowed in band rehearsal or performance.  These items can and will be taken up by the discretion of the band director or officers.  Students are to stay alert and attentive at all times during rehearsals and performances.   

 15.      Demerits will be given for any violations of the Christian Brothers High School Band Constitution or any other mandate of Christian Brothers High School.  

 

 

Article II

Rules for Pep Band  

 

 1.         The band stands in band formation in complete uniform during the entire game.

 2.         Officers will always visit the opposing team’s band at home games.

 3.         During the game, members are excused from band formation for emergency situations only by directors permission.  Breaks should last no longer than ten minutes.  Students who are late will be penalized one demerit for every minute late up to 10 demerits.

 4.         No non-band member may sit with the band during the game which include parents and other friends.

 5.        Members are responsible for getting their own instruments to the games. Percussionists and the rhythm section will receive help if necessary. The president and percussion section leader are responsible for getting all equipment to the game.

 6.        Pep band uniform consists of pep band shirt, khaki pants or khaki shorts, and appropriate shoes, no sandals. Only letter jackets or band windbreakers may be worn over pep band shirts. If a band member does not have a letter jacket or pep band wind breaker, a white, purple, gold, or black long sleeve shirt may be layered underneath the pep band shirt.  Only CBHS purple baseball hats or CBHS purple winter caps may be worn. Any other hats are not permitted.  No ear rings or excessive jewelry are permitted.

7.        All students must have a flip folder and lyre for their music.

8.        Students may not leave the band performance until dismissed by the band director.  Attendance will be taken before, after, and during game if suspicion warrants it.

9.        Band members are to play what has been practiced in the band room.  No Improvisation is acceptable, and no playing between songs will be tolerated.

10.      Any item that causes distraction during a performance can be confiscated, including cell phones, video games, and I-pods.

11.       Vocal or physical profanity will not be tolerated.

 

 

Article III

Elections

 

1.         All candidates must turn in a typed officer resume and statement of intensions in paragraph form that is to be submitted to the band director in order to be nominated as an officer.

 

2.         Only Seniors who have been members of the concert band for two years or more may be elected to President, Vice President , Secretary and Librarian and must be approved by the band director. In the event that no Seniors are nominated Juniors will be allowed submit a resume as determined by the band officers and band director.  Nominees must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA and must be a well rounded band member.

 

3.            Nominees may win by majority vote only.  In the instance of a tie the officer will be appointed by the Director.

 

4.            Elections will be held at the end of the previous year at the discretion of the Band Director.

 

5.         Only Seniors and returning members of the performing band are eligible to vote.

 

6.         If found unreliable, any officer may be impeached and the directors and officers will appoint a new officer immediately. An impeached officer can not be reelected. If the President is impeached, the Vice President will assume the position of president and a new Vice President will be appointed.  All other positions will be directly appointed.

7.            Meetings of the officers must take place every day after school.

 

 

 

Article IV

  Duties of the Officers

 

1.         The President

            a.   Opens rehearsal with the Alma Mater and School Song

            b.   Addresses the band with any notes and remarks

            c.   Oversees that all necessary equipment is at all performances

            d.   Assists other officers in their duties

            e.   Checks uniforms at public performances

            f.    Presides over the officers meetings

            g.   Presides over band room after school.

            h.   Reinforces sectionals (one per week per section)

            i.  Reinforces section leader meetings

            j.  Tunes the concert band before performances to a concert Bb.

                      

2.         The Vice-President

a.       Issues and collects uniforms and is responsible for their order and cleanliness

b.      Preside in the absence of the president

c.       Responsible for promotion of band activities

d.       In charge of any correspondence

e.        Checks uniforms at public performances

f.    presides over band room in the morning.

 g.   makes sure horns are taken home by band students every day.

 h.  In charge of clean up after school.

 

3.         The Secretary

a.       Takes attendance at daily rehearsal and at all public performances

b.      Responsible for accuracy of merit files

c.       Responsible for neatness of the band room throughout the year.

d.      Checks uniforms at public performances

            e.   presides over band room during lunch period.

            f.   makes sure horns are taken home by band students every day.

          

 

4.         The Librarian

a.       Responsible for all music in the library and its neatness and order including portfolio cabinet.

b.      Checks Uniforms at public performances

c.       Enforces band members respect for their music

d.      Makes copies and labels band music

e.  presides over band room after school

f.   In charge of the copier

g. Checks to make sure all band students have their music and pencil in rehearsal

 

5.        Section Leaders

a.       Responsible for collaborating with their section before or after school in section

                     rehearsals at least once a week.

b.      Responsible for the conduct and musical advancement of their section.

 

   

 

Article V

Cleanliness

 

1.         Clean-up Duties

            a.   merits will be given for clean up after school

b.        Chairs and stands must be straightened  

c.          All practice rooms must be straightened.  Only one stand and two chairs shall be in each practice room.

d.    Each section will have one day a week slotted for clean up every day after school.  Merits and demerits may be given accordingly.

  

 

 

Article VI

  The Merit System

 

1.         Ten Demerits are equal to a letter grade.

 2.         Earning one Merit cancels out a demerit for the exception of black demerits.

 3.         Ways to achieve merits

a.       One merit will be given for any Minor scale played from memory

b.      Any extra work done above and beyond the call of duty

c.      Ten merits will be given for the placement of any Honor Band or All-West band.

d.     Ten merits will be given for a superior rating or first division in any competition or festival, five for a good rating or second division.

e.        Ten additional merits will be given for the placement of any State competition.

f.    Merits determined by the band director will be given for any public performances.

g.  One merit will be given for clean up after school or during lunch (limited to one merit per day)

h.  Exceptional rehearsals or performances can be merited by the director

            i.  For every practice hour past five, a merit will be awarded up to five merits.

 

4.         Ways to obtain demerits

a.      One demerit will be given for being in the office, using the computer, or writing on the chalk board unauthorized.

b.       Five demerits will be given for being unprepared at a rehearsal which includes music, instruments, mutes, reeds, pencil, etc.

c.      Two demerits will be given for an unexcused tardy for rehearsal

d.       A maximum of 10 demerits will be given for being late to a performance, one demerit per minute late.

e.        Ten black demerits will be given for being unprepared at a performance

f.       Five demerits will be given for any unauthorized eating in the band room

g.        Three demerits will be given for unsatisfactory upkeep of sheet music, or folder maintenance. 

h.         Two or more demerits will be given for the use of profanity before, after or during public performances or  rehearsals.

i.      Three demerits will be given for a horn left overnight in the band room

j.     Seven demerits will be given for littering anywhere while representing the band.

k.       One demerit will be given for talking or playing out of turn in band rehearsal

l.      Three demerits will be given for talking out of turn during a band performance

m.   Five demerits will be given for playing someone else's instrument including percussion.

n.  Five demerits will be given for roughhousing

o.  Three demerits will be given for verbal disrespect to other band members

 

   

5.  Ways to obtain Black Demerits.

            a.  20 black demerits will be given for an absence to a public performance

            b.  10 black demerits will be given for destruction or defacement of band or public property including graffiti

            c.   15 black demerits will be given for blatant disrespect to the reputation of the band both in public performances and in rehearsal.    

            d.  5 black demerits for unexcused absences from a normal rehearsal

            e.  20 black demerits for unexcused absence from a mandatory rehearsal

            f.  5 black demerits if a student is asked by the director to leave rehearsal

            g.  10 black demerits if student is asked to leave a performance

        

 

6.         Merits and demerits, mentioned or not, may be altered and given, according to the nature of the deed and pending a director-officer conference. 

7.         Any student receiving sixty demerits not counting merits is automatically suspended from the band for the remainder of the marking period unless granted by the director.  A student serving a suspension must report to dean every day.

8.          If suspended a second time, the student will be terminated from the band.

  

 

Article VII

  Awards

 

1.         The band letter will be given after any member complete 3 semesters in the performing band and will be awarded at the band banquet.

 

2.            Chevrons will be given for each year of service in the band.

 

3.         Any member of the band who receives more merits than demerits every marking period displays a good attitude, makes good grades, and shows musical advancement throughout the year will receive a All-Round Merit Award.

 

4.         The Ralph G. Hale Award, given in memory of Birdie C. Hale and now Ralph G. Hale, is presented to the most outstanding senior who has served three years in the band, determined by his exhibition of the most outstanding qualities the band is founded for; outstanding leadership, musical excellence, and pride and loyalty in the traditions of the Christian Brothers High School Band.

 

5.         The John Sandridge Award is presented to the most musical senior in the band determined by his musical accomplishments over his high school career.

 

6.         The Br. Maurelian Spirit Award is given to the student, freshman through senior, who best exemplifies the spirit and unity of the band through his attitude and performances.

 

7.        The Mike Krepper Jazz Award is awarded to the senior who exhibits the best knowledge of Jazz through performance.

 

8.        The Captain Charles Harrison award for Marching is presented to the senior who exhibits the best marching skills both through leadership and performance.

 

9.        The Achievement Award is given to any member of the band  who exhibits achievement in any area  related to band.

10.       The Leadership Award is given to any member of the band who exhibits leadership in the band.

11.       The Arion is awarded to the senior who displays the best leadership to the band.

12.        The Directors award is awarded to the senior who displays the best loyalty to the band.

 

 

Article VIII

Playing Assignments

The grading system for the playing assignments will be added on to the students grade at the end of the marking period:

A         =          Superior – Flawless                                                      =          10 merits                  
B         =          Excellent – 1-3 Minor Errors                                        =          5 merits
C         =          Good – 3-10 Minor Errors                                            =          0 merits
D         =          Poor – More Minor Errors/One Major Error            =         5 Demerits
F          =          Unsatisfactory – More than One Major Error            =          10 Demerits
I           =          Failure to Turn in Assignment                                    =          10 Black Demerits
L          =          For every day that the assignment is past due           =          5 Demerits
