Christian Brothers High school Band

Detailed History

1951-1952

The Hotel Sherman underwent a temporary change of name Friday, Dec. 15th 1951, to please the Tennessee students whom the name "Sherman" was abhorrent.  The Christian Brothers College, High School Band, performing at the fifth annual Midwest National Band Clinic in Chicago, marched into their hotel lobby wearing Confederate uniforms and carrying Confederate flags.  After playing "Dixie," the band erected a sign proclaiming the Sherman to be the "Robert E. Lee."  The hotel was named for its builder, Francis Cornwall Sherman, and not for William Tecumseh Sherman, Union army general, but what's the difference?
