The Diviners is the story of a troubled young boy named Buddy
Layman and his friendship with a disenchanted preacher, C.C. Showers. It
is the early 1930s in a small southern Indiana town. When the boy was very
young he almost drowned; his mother died saving him. As a result, the boy
is deathly afraid of water. But, also as a result, he can predict
when it is going to rain and he can find or "divine" water underground.
The preacher comes to Indiana, having given up
God and preaching. He wanders into town unaware that the people are
starving for religion and some form of salvation. The play explores the
relationship between the two and their journey to discover their faith
despite interference from their friends and family. Despite a tragic
ending, this is a play about the human spirit, faith, and the conflicts
they can encompass. It won the writing prize for drama in The
American College Theatre Festival in 1994. |
