Follow the basics: Be on time; be respectful; be prepared;
meet deadlines. Class behavior and participation are active, regular
elements of your grade. Requirements of appearance and behavior as
outlined in the CBHS Student Handbook will be enforced.
Homework: Homework frequently will involve nightly reading
assignments.
Quizzes will be based on nightly readings and on notes taken in class.
Ask questions whenever necessary – I will assume you understand
everything as presented if you do not ask questions.
Make-up Work: Students absent from class are responsible for
assignments and should consult the teacher or their classmates for work
missed. A grade of ZERO will be recorded for homework, major tests or
papers not made up within five school days of the student's return.
Class Projects: Periodic projects will be a part of the course of
study. These projects may be completed individually; some may require
group work. Varying levels of credit will be awarded for outside
projects.
Extra Credit: Students who work hard but need extra help may be
allowed to submit work for extra credit, at the discretion of the
teacher.
Notebooks: Students must bring to class each day a SPIRAL,
ONE-SUBJECT NOTEBOOK. They must take careful notes to reinforce their
understanding of lectures and discussions. Students must add context to
notes – don’t simply copy what’s on the screen. Notebooks periodically
will be collected and graded, based both on content and neatness of
appearance.
Testing: Quizzes may be given on any day, and will not be
announced. They will cover lecture and reading material over the past
several days.
Objective and/or subjective examinations are given at the end (and
middle, in come cases) of each major unit. If a student misses a major
test due to absence, failure to make it up within five days of the
student's return will result in a grade of zero.
Grading: Students are evaluated based on assignments and testing,
but also on their demeanor during class time. Points are given to
students who listen attentively, respect others, ask questions, engage
in class discussion and show a general interest in the material.
Conversely, points are deducted for students who talk excessively, nod
off, are ill prepared or who show a lack of interest in the learning
process. Each day a student is influencing his grade by the way he
conducts himself while in the classroom.
Students will be graded each quarter according to the following
criteria:
Daily/weekly assignments
Thoughtful class participation and proper demeanor
Quizzes/exams
Special projects/research
