Welcome to the webpage of Dr. Ellen Davis. As we
begin our study of British literature, there are some things that might
help in making the experience a successful one. In the first
semester, we will concentrate on the beginnings of the literature (Beowulf,
Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, and the medieval drama), developing
vocabulary and writing skills, and some practice for the ACT/PSAT tests.
It is important that you take responsibility for coming
prepared for class each day. This means having your books, being
prepared to take notes, and DOING THE REQUIRED READING.
Class Policies:
Please come
prepared for class...we call it homework because you are supposed to do
it at home, not in the hall 10 minutes before class. Have your
books every day. Have something to write WITH and something to
write ON (a notebook or place in your binder for your English notes is
very important). Participation in class discussion is important,
and part of this is showing respect for the opinions of others.
Paying attention is a sign of respect for your classmates.
Grades are
determined by the total number of points that you earn divided by the
number of points possible . So if in any quarter it is possible to earn
2000 points, and you manage to earn 1999, then your average for the
quarter is 99% (or an A). THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS EXTRA CREDIT.
Except for class time, I am in my library office every day from 7:15 AM until 4 PM, if
any student needs help. If at any time you have a question or concern,
I am here to help in any way I can. It is best to email me at
edavis@cbhs.org or
edavis36@hotmail.com .
You will notice a section on this webpage entitled "Young Adult
Literature." These reading lists and the accompanying class schedule
and assignments are for my Graduate students at Christian Brothers
University. So you will not have to be concerned with anything in
this section.

Writing Requirements: For students writing the 5
paragraph essay or working on research papers, these are the English
Department policies governing writing . The minimum writing requirement
is 12 essays during the year as well as a research paper.
Guidelines for
Typing Papers
1. All essays must be typed double-spaced.
All essays must have a title page. The format for the
title page can be found in the booklet, Introduction to
Research, which is available in the bookstore. You may
also read this booklet online by going to the library page
of the CBHS website.
2. Remember when using
"spell check" that it is still possible to make a mistake in
spelling by using an incorrect form of a word, i. e. to, too,
two or their, there, they're.
A misspelled word lowers the
essay grade
by one letter
grade. A
run-on sentence or a sentence fragment lowers the essay grade by
one letter grade.
