CBHS competes in the Shelby County High School Swim League. This league is composed of 18 teams from the area. Times done in individual events at the regular season meets are used to determine the participation and seeding of the entrants in the County Championships. Each swimmer must achieve Qualifying times for any event entered. The coach determines who will be entered in any event at any meet.
Qualifying times are also in place to determine
who competes in the State Championships.
All Qualifying times must be achieved in the current season - typically between
September and February.
Any team member may earn a Varsity Letter regardless of his year of
graduation; the coach reserves the right to award or withhold a letter
in individual instances.
Varsity Letter:
To qualify for a Varsity Letter you need to achieve at
least one STATE Qualifying time.
Anyone who scores in the Top 3 in any event in the county championships will
also receive a varsity
letter for swimming at CBHS if they have not achieved a State Qualifying time.
Also, anyone who scores in the top 6 in any 2 events will receive a varsity
letter.
IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A VARSITY LETTER, YOU MUST
ATTEND ALL REGULARLY SCHEDULED PRACTICES. PERFECT ATTENDANCE at all practices
is the means to achieving your goals. Those who do not attend ALL practices are
at the coach's discretion as to whether they receive a Varsity Letter or not.
Other individuals could be awarded a varsity letter at the discretion of the
coach.
Opportunities to compete in any of the meets will be awarded only to those
who are practicing regularly, either with their USS team or with the high school
practice group offered by Coach Whittington at the University of Memphis.
(Those who really are committed to lettering in the sport of swimming should investigate competitive programs around town for year-round participation.)
JV Letter:
If you only attend most of the regular practices and compete fairly
well in the regular meets, you will receive a JV letter for Swimming at CBHS.
(We offer 4 practices per week and you only make 2 or 3 of them each week is the
situation here.)
Certificate of Participation:
Those who make the practices as they can, but do not make a commitment
to practice regularly will only receive a Certificate of Participation
for swimming at CBHS. (Practicing only 3 days per week and less is not a
commitment!)
